Students who initiated the action are pleased with how things are.
‘This is exactly what we fought for in the letter to the President BronisÅ‚aw Komorowski in late August this year. Even the statute’s effective date is correct’, says Karol Przywara, University of WrocÅ‚aw, Student Self-Government spokesman.
The action began with Web campaign. In mid July, the representatives of Student Self-Government opened a Facebook website backing up the return of 50 percent railway ticket discounts for students, promised by Bronisław Komorowski during the elections. Few thousand users expressed their support to the group very quickly and the action gained publicity in the media.
The next step was to send the letter to the President, reminding him of the promise made. The students proposed 1st January 2011 as the effective date of the discounts. They also handed a copy to the Speaker of the Sejm (Polish Parliament), Grzegorz Schetyna, announcing that if their actions are not addressed, they will begin to gather signatures under the bill. As it turns out, their commitment paid off.
The authors of the action declare they’re going to keep an eye on legislative works and suggest potential amendments. They also won’t give up on including Ph.D. students. Government remains silent in that matter.
‘We’ll feel reassured only upon buying half-price tickets on railway stations’, says Przywara.
Facebook group ‘We want 50 percent railway ticket reduction for students back!’ has 13,000 supporters already.
50 percent discounts for students in 2011
Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, announced that higher railway ticket discounts for students are back from the beginning of the new calendar year. This is the result of a social action initiated by students in Wrocław. Ministries of Infrastructure, Finance and Science and Higher Education are working on the legal aspects of Prime Minister’s decision.
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education confirmed PM’s declaration and informed that accelerated legislative works on turning present 37 percent discount into a 49 or 51 percent one are in progress. Thanks to inter-resort cooperation, new discounts should be mentioned in budget statutes which makes it possible to introduce them as soon as in the beginning of 2011.
