Geniuses and team players: Wrocław culture of experiment

Knowledge has never been as important as today. In a global world knowledge production and knowledge management become central to economic success. At the same time the meaning of knowledge has become much broader: it is much more than traditional R&D, and it also means other forms of innovation.

Cities today find their unique ways of capitalizing on this global process as they build and sustain knowledge and innovation ecosystems. This work demands concerted effort of many players, including businesses, universities and government. Working across disciplines, institutions and different mindsets, metropolitan knowledge hubs become powerhouses of economic growth and determine the future of their communities.

Today, Wrocław also stands good chances of becoming a leading Central European knowledge hub. One reason for that is the Wrocław culture of experiment.

Experiment in Wrocław has many meanings. Viewed from afar Wrocław can be seen as an experiment in itself. In 1945 it was not at all clear whether the ruined city receiving a totally new population would rise again. Today, that defining experience of adaptation to unfavorable circumstances still shapes our thinking. To give one example, the strategy for Wrocław builds on flexibility and accommodation rather than technocratic top-down approaches and predictive agendas. This is an important distinction in the age of globalization.

The Wrocław culture of experiment will only develop if the global players who have decided to invest here play a role in the debate.

There are many questions:
•    What values and practices are considered pivotal in global business knowledge networks today?
•    How is knowledge produced and sold?
•    What is more important: individual genius or team work?
•    What qualities are most sought-for by global leaders in prospective graduates?
•    Who wins the global competition for knowledge-intensive business?

On April 12, knowledge experts for McKinsey & Company will share their views on the culture experiment in a workshop for student leaders organized at Wrocław Academic Hub. McKinsey&Company is a global leader in management consulting and invests 10% of its annual revenues in knowledge development and management.  A few months ago, Wrocław was chosen as a location  for McKinsey’s fourth global Knowledge Center after Boston, MA (USA), New Delhi (India), and Shanghai (China).
